Sorry it’s been such a long time since my last update. I have had my head down sorting out my plan for next year… since my last update I finished up my season quite early.

Even do I was content with were I got to after a short period on the bike It was still frustrating to not be were I wanted to be at that stage. So I called it quits and went to work starting with the rehab stuff again strengthening everything back up.. Then came the move to Australia….

Australia has become my home from home. I love it here. the people I stay are now considered family they totally understand why I’m here and that makes were I am the perfect place to lay the foundation’s to next season.. while here I’m riding with a team called ‘arbitrage’ a nice bunch of lad’s that noticed I was short on training gear!! I will train and do the occasional race in their kit while I’m here.

In the last month or two I have been recruiting team’s… I wanted to go back to France so I started there.. I started big obviously and had some interest but it always came down to having no results last season in France which I needed to get into a big division 1 club…so I have settled for a good team with the races I need to show my face.. Named ‘’APOGE CYCLISTE’’ they seem like a very good set up but once the programme is there I’m happy. It consists of a lot of elite national races which has the big teams present.so that along with nation cup’s, Euro’s and hopefully the World’s I can do the buisness.

Since I am going in at a level I no I am very capable of competing at and it’s my last year as an espoir (under 23) (even do I’m only 21 next week)!! I have to get results and show what I’m capable of to move in to a bigger team next year. I feel like I’m a season behind were I had planned. although I happy to be moving my way back up and cannot wait to get started!!!

for now its the hard work.

Ill be back soon, A.

At last ive made it to the end of a block of training that began at the national champs which largely consisted of volume..long ride’s in the hill’s was common.I was really looking forward to the rest and it began last thursday with a mixture of some total days off and very easy short ride’s! although that ran into 2 races at the weekend in which I didnt feel to great..very blocked on the saturday and just lethargic on sunday!it resulted in a 2nd and a 4th. I can really feel the body recovering now and it means I can now hit the next block hard and rested..and it all begins tommorow with a ramp test…the first one sice ive come back..although this will be horrible it will give me the number’s I need to target the nation’s cup time trial ”chrono champenois” in september which im targeting..If i really want to be competitive here my threshold power must improve over the next 6 weeks so it’s not going to be easy but im willing to sacrifice the races left to do it!..although im looking forward to the suir valley;-)

until next time, A.

what a week…im now into week 4 of a very hard 4 week block largely consisting of volume but with some nasty stuff mixed in…the weather didnt really help this week…especially tuesday when I rode to mondello to ride a race…. and my longest day based up around wiclow taking in the wicklow and sally gap amonst others was grim to say the least!..but I felt like I done something when I got back thats for sure.(a special thanks to the old lady in balymore eustace who saved the day with a free bannana and some jellies! life saver:-)

Then with training in mind I rode the mullingar 2day….I rode to mullingar on day one 50 k.. fell asleep in the car before the start and dragged myself around the race..I didnt go well today.. very lethargic and cranky and resulted in me sitting at the back giving out!…and only that I payed a 50 euro entry fee I was riding home!…day 2. time trial… when I get it hard to motivate myself for a tt I no im tired.. but gave it a lash anyway..only to be absolutely hammered by damien shaw and finish second!! he did an awesome time.I cant think of many if any that could have beaten him in that tt today. he said afterwards ”I new the road’s which was an advantage”…..it was a straight 6k tt on a main road! not much of an advantage to no the road.

later was the same story I started the race not very excited..and missed the break…but so had damien shaw the race leader and a few other good riders.so as the race went on the break hung around the minute or so mark… so the second last time up a hard hill on the course I gave it a bit of a dig and eventually rode across and through the breakaway up to the 2 leader’s colm cassidy and robin kelly, and won the sprint for another win!.. really nice to be able to do this when im so tired and when im only back a few week’s!!..so when the volume block end’s…. I take a rest and then start the fast sharp stuff…look’s good for a strong end to the season! at the moment I have nothing sorted abroad for the end of this season but I’m hard at work for next year whick look’s good. I also have managed to get an entry in chrono champenois a big 1.1 nation’s cup time trail in september which ill aim high in. I managed 15th it in last year last so let’s see what I can do!

until next week,

Since the last post ive got up to alot! I somehow managed an under 23 medal in the national’s road race although the real racing was up the road I was very happy with the progression…that went to my surprise straight into the hardest week ive done this year!!…usually I have a good plan out in front of me for anything up to a few months but when coming back from injury thats impossible as it’s all about imroving slowly and if you need to take a step back…take it!!

The week was the bones of 900 kilometres and hurt like hell at times.. this ran straight into the leinster/provincial champs at the weekend and I wanted to show myself that the training im doing is not just for fun!..went into the race aggressive which paid off! first road win of the year:-)after the presentation and picking up my envelope with my week’s wages!;-) I started to ride back to rosslare were I was staying with family for a few day’s….I brought no food with me and opted to use the race money to buy myself something nice on the way home!…untill I opened the envelope at the till and….a cheque!!! I got the hunger knock bad and was seing star’s when I got in!! that made it a solid 160 k day..later I fell asleep in the cinema.

up a 5 the next the morning to catch the train back home…which is unbeliveably slow.straight to the gym and then to a race in mondello were I rode hard but was wrecked…then up half the night trying to sort out the rest of my season…which isnt easy this late in the year but hopefully something decent comes about in the very near future!!well I better get out on the bike and get this horrible ride done!! until next time.

well that was a crappy night weather wise!!… the last few weeks I was unsure about riding the champs but my coach convinced me to forget about results and use it as a training session(that may go well) and to see were you are really at when the chip’s are down.It was my first tt of the year and although the weather was shit I loved every minute.. I thought the fact hadn’t rode the bike in that posistion for such a long time this year it would hurt alot but the EXOCET lived up to its reputation awesome bike to ride!!. afterwards looking at the results sheet wasnt so nice and seing a 52.. nearly a min 30 down on my under 23 rival sean downey…this took a while to swallow..but now I think about it its a very solid ride to be only that much down on a rider like sean with the prep he’s had this year in france..sean missed the nationals last year and we havnt really got a chance to go at it against each other in a tt both fighting fit! I look forward to the day! anyway now onto the next race…onward’s and upwards. A ps.no trouble with the knee at all!!

only 2 weeks ago I hadnt raced yet this season and this evening im chilling out with 8 races under my belt..getting better in each one with confidence growing that my knees are actually nearly over the worst of it. I raced the paddy flanagan 2day in kildare at the weekend and wanted to get around it safely and use it as training..after a crazy race to get to the start on time due to a punctured wheel and a few lost tempers…..(to say the least) I made it to the start signing on for the race 20 minutes late on the starting line that was kindly held for an extra few minutes!..I missed an initial break and long story short…a few guys nipped up the road …so with the time trial in mind the next morning I tried my best to close the gap at the end…succesfuly enough..to 20 seconds finishing slighty bewildered at were my good leg’s came from! ..starting the time trial I didnt no what to expect as I wouldnt be crazy about very short time trials on a normal day..but I pulled a win out of the bag and got my first unexpected result of the season! felt very comfortable and smooth on the new ”planet x exocet” despite only riding it twice. going into the crit I was 3 seconds down and was optimistic dispite it normally being a bunch sprint…after a few attacks the pase was hard and it wasnt looking too bad but out of nowere really the 2 laps to go sign popped up! it was cut to a 30 min criterium due to the guards!.. so I was a little dissaspointed it ended so soon, but happy with the result nonetheless at this stage of the comeback!..also Im very glad that colm cassidy got the win a good mate and a deserving winner.I now find myself a little more confident and looking forward to the nationals next week with absolutely no pressure..onwards and upwards! A

Well after a long Winter plagued with injury I’m back to racing full on and getting some fitter and fitter every week. My season started this year with the Rás where I was well under my normal fitness but I saw it as a great chance to get some form in the legs and get some good distance in the legs too. The race itself was very tough for me but I got great support from a lot of people to help me fight through and finish the 8 days which was all I set out to do from the start. As the week went on I was getting better and better and got involved in a few breaks but never managed to stay away till the finish. After the race I picked up a chest infection which a lot of the riders ended up with due to the bad weather of just the hard racing which left me feeling a bit run down.

After a week or so of rest and when I started to feel better I started back racing on Monday with the first stage of the Leinster 3 day in Mondello. The race itself was fast, windy and very tough. I started the race feeling a bit blocked but as the race went on I started to feel better. The race was run on handicap so by the time we caught the front group there was only a couple of km’s left so a result was out of the picture but it felt great to get some speed back in my legs. The next stage was good again and I found myself in a break of 7 guys chasing the first group on the road and catching them with about 3km to go. As we caught them there were a few attacks in the final km’s but it all came together for a sprint where I ended up 8th. All positives to take out of the race though as it was a good sign and was great for my confidence to be involved in the racing at the front. The final stage of the 3 day race was in Baterstown and was once again run on handicap so as I was in the last group to leave I was left chasing to get to the front group from the start. I managed to attack a lot in last 2 of 3 laps but we only managed to catch the front limit group on the finish line but once again was good for my confidence to be racing good in the front.

Next on the cards is the crit champs tomorrow which I have good memories of as the last one I did saw the late Paul Healion win. So that race will always be a memorable and important race. As my fitness is on the way up I still dont think I will have the form to get on the podium but I will do my very best and will hope to help Paidi O’Brien get the top step on the podium with all that I can do. Then it’s onto the champs and back to Belgium with Maria where im looking forward to getting back into the thick of it.

Over and out.

Stephen.

Well we survived today. We were very unlucky to leave Gedi abit isolated today. Just sam managed to get into the break with him and if he hadn’t chances are Gedi would have been ganged up on by all the gc riders in the break. Thankfully sam was super strong yesterday and was able to do a super ride to hold the front group at around 2mins.
The first two hours of the stage where super fast and when the split came on the koh the two marks had just had a hard 10-15mins covering everything and I punctured at a very bad time so we were left abit short for following the split. Normally we would all be in a split like that as it happened right at the front of the peloton that the split occured.
But all is fine. Gedi kept the jersey McNally, Cassidy and myself all had an easy day in the groupetto so we will be ready to go again today.
Looking out the window this morning the weather looks nice again and I’m very much looking forward to getting into the stage and doing some racing.

stage 5 done and dusted, and even if i do say so myself the an post-sean kelly team was quite phenomenal today. We had to ride fairly early on after a dangerous rider got away in a strong breakaway just before Glengariff at the 30km mark. We had Mark Cassidy in the move but with the rider from Aix en Provence up there we had to chase it down. We put the full team bar Gedi on the front and rode down the 1minute gap at some rate. When we caught them the race got going again and another breakaway went away fairly quickly. We were quite happy with this breakaway and rode a steadier tempo behind these riders and kept the gap within touching distance. Its a great feeling riding on the front of the peloton as we did keeping the race under control and protecting our race leader. Once we had the breakaway in sight in the last ten kilometers i sat up to save the legs for another big day tomorrow and therefore i am now also out of the G.C. race, but im not disappointed about that at all, we have a super strong leader and we all give 100% for him now.
