Well today was another tough tough stage that produced another small shake up in gc. With tough headwinds and hard roads it was always going to be a hard stage but with the 4 categorised climbs it was made even harder. The climb of Healy pass inside the last 30 km caused a selection but the descent did even more so with David mcCann having the worst luck, crashing on the first hairpin of the descent and losing 5:40 as a result. We rode excenty as a te again. And after I rode as much as I could in last 5-10pm to get a sprint for either sam or Gedi it was Gedi who delivered with another stage win. Animal is the only way to describe him but that’s no surprise to any of us. Stage 5 should be another cracker with many more climbs and plenty of wind.

Well stage 3 at the an post ras was massively different from stage 2 in many ways. First we started with a side/tail wind which meant some very fast racing. We missed the originally break just before gort so we chased it down.  There was alot more attacking for about another half hour then finally a break went away. Gediminas had managed to slip into the break but we were the only people to realise this and as the break disappeared up the road all the other contenders for the race had no idea Bagdonas was potentially riding away with the race. I suppose for once having no radios actually benefited us. The break got a max gap of close to 8minutes before giant Asia and later the Irish national team started chasing. The last 30km of the stage was abit more difficult with the two chasing teams setting a hard pace and the last climb of the crag cave being very steep in parts. The chasers brought the gap down to 2minutes at the finish. With Bagdonas finishing sixth on the stage good enough to take the jersey by 1:15. So roll on the next few days and much more racing.

Last night when we were lookin ahead to today’s stage, we all agreed it was going to be a hard day and wasn’t going to be another bunch sprint.
I dont think anybody anticipated it was going to be as hard as it turned out. I don’t remember ever riding in wind as strong as today and it was a block head wind for the basically the entire stage. It was so strong at times the bunch I was in was grinding along in the small ring at 15kph on the flat. Unbelieveable stuff, for the entire stage we averaged 33kph, I think that must be one of the lowest average speeds I’ve ever seen in a race.
The stage went very well for the an post-Sean Kelly team. A break went early on and we had mark mc Nally in that. This put us in a good situation and meant we never had to drive any attacks, for the rest of the team the job was to cover any counter attacks and follow wheels, a nice job to have in such headwinds.
Marks break was caught after around 100km and soon after another break went and we had mark Cassidy and gediminas Bagdonas in this break. Another break split off the front ofthe bunch and I got into this one. Eventually the two groups came together and we then had three riders in the front. Gedi attacked with about 30km to go and along with three others built a big enough gap to stay away to the finish and Gedi done the business for us and took the stage win. I nipped away from the chasing group in the last km and took 5th place. A terribly hard day but worth the effort and suffering for the results we got.
Check back in tomorrow on www.ultmatesports.ie for my report on stage 3.

Welcome to my first blog, not just on ultimatesports.ie but first blog anywhere so you’ll have to forgive me if its a bit boring ill try to improve them as i get a more experience writing them throughout this season.

The 2011 season is well underway now and i have G.P. Marseillaise and the Etoile de besseges in my legs.  As first races of a new season go, i have to say i was pleased with my form and condition.  Marseillaise is a tough 1.1 starting and finishing in Marseille, France and alternates between a flat and mountainous route, with this year being the later.  This was my third time doing this race and probably the best i have felt yet, on the climbs i was comfortable and this probably led my slight mistake of starting the longest (14km) climb too far back and as a result missed the main split of the day although with Vacansoleil setting a fierce tempo for a certain Mr Ricco, even starting at the front on the climb it would still have been difficult to stay there.  I eventually finished in the second “peloton” outside the time limit.

Etoile de Besseges started the wednesday after Marseillaise and is a nice 5 day stage race over fairly mixed terrain with flat windy stages and hard hilly stages.  I had picked up a slight cold from the freezing temperatures at Marseillaise and suffered on the first two days as a result.  But i could feel myself getting better both health and form wise.  On the third stage after 80km of hard hard racing, on a small, lumpy and twisting road along what appeared to be a big lake i attacked, hoping to be joined by a few more riders and get abit of luck from a radioless peloton, but no other riders jumped across to me and with the a good gap and the peloton out of sight i just got on with it.  It was a fantastic feeling to be leading such a big race even if at the back of my head i always knew there was no hope of holding off to the finish.  The only thing i could do was forget that fact and give everything i could and then just hope for the best.  With 12km to go at the bottom of a steep king of the mountains climb the thought sin the back of my head were proved correct and the bunch swallowed me up.  Ah well was nice while it lasted and the French public showed their appreciation for my efforts the whole time i was in the break and the next day.  As a result of going so deep while solo on stage 3, and a furious tempo from right from the off, stage 4 turned out to be one of the hardest i’ve ever had on a bike, i cant remember how many climbs there where that day but i do remember i was dropped inside the last 500m of the last climb of the day and spent the 20km to the finish in the cavelcade busting a gut to get back into the bunch.  At the finish i was still within touching distance but just couldn’t get to the back of the bunch which i hadn’t realised until seeing the results that night was less than half the size so i guess it was not just me suffering and when you’ve had a hard day it’s always nice to know it was just yourself hurting.  The last day and i got abit to excited abit too early on in the stage and gave everything on the first climb to get in the break, i succeeded but Johnny Hoogerland (2nd on G.C.) was also there so the leaders team was never going to let it slip away and when we where caught i never got time to recuperate before the start of the next climb and was dropped.  With so far to go to the stage and the fact we were racing on laps i had to stop, a disappointing end to a good race for myself.

It was off home then for two weeks to train on the fantastic Donegal roads, the best training roads anywhere, i always say.  Just enough time to recover from a weeks racing in France and polish off the form for a tough spring in Belgium.

Hope you check back for my second blog soon to see how i’ve been going in Belgium, hopefully i’ll have some results to write about.

After 3 weeks now with the an post team things are starting to settle down now a bit as the racing contuines… with still another 2 months of racing left it looks like my last race will be on the 17th of october so it gives me lots of time to get to my 100% fitness and try get a result in one of the bigger pro races… the last week has been quiet for me as i have been suffering from a cold si just had to cut back a little till that cleared.. as of today i can safely say it has gone and im feeling healthy again.. next race is tomorrow in a town of aarshcot which will consist of 90 laps of a 1.4km lap so i can see myself gett dizzy after a while… just a mtter of staying at the front and racing hard…. not too sure what my next big race will be with an post, looking like a 1.1 on sunday hopefully… house is full with 6 riders at the moment so its been a good laugh in the house every day and the moral is high with everyone, though the end of the season is near so its all guns blazing for the last few weeks and try get whatever results we can….

First for Powertap,SRM,Quarq, ZIPP, Mavic, FastForward and many more

over the last 4 days i have had two of my first races with the new team and both went well which i am happy to report. my first race was on sunday in antwerp which was a uci 1.2 race and was run over a flat course with about 10km of cobalts in total.. the race started of very fast with alot of jumping going on.. i was involved in a few groups that got away and really felt my legs have come around after the suir valley 3 day in ireland and was really happy to be able to race aggressively at the front of the race… in the end i missed the move but team mate and good friend ronan mclaughlin was in it so that took the stress of the team as the race settled a bit…. after about 90km of racing the chase really started as the gap to the break went over 2 minutes which saw the break being brought back with about 50km to go… as the end of the race approched i started to feel tired and just sat in as it was a long day for me and one of the longest races i have done all year… in the end it came to a bunch sprint which was won by a slovenian rider from the team palmans colstrop with maxieme from my team finishing 4th and me somewhere in that group also. a very long day in the saddle and was happy to have finished my first race with the team in the front group and having done what i was told to do for the day.

Then yesterday i had another big race in a town called housdem which is one i was really looking forward to because i was going to be racing against big teams infront of big crowds which was exciting for me. in the reace there were riders from pro tour teams like, quick step, rabobank, radio shack, katusha, luqigas and lotto. it was a first fro me riding against such big riders so i wasnt sure what to expect. As the race started i was half way down the bunch of 170 riders and felt good so i decided to move to the front and try to get in the break.. as i got to the front i started to go with moves and fonud myself in a few groups off the front but nothing too dangerous. at one stage i was off the front with kevin hulsemens from quick step and another guy from lotto and we got a big gap and the bunch had stalled so i thought we were gone but after a while the bunch started to get going again and we were caught. in the end a break got up the road and we were never too see them again.  in the end Woulter Weylandt from Quick Step won and also Stijn Devolder was up ther in the top 5. i think i rolled in somewhere in the to 40 and still felt good at the end. I was really happy with how the race went because it was a big test for me to see how i could cope to race with some of the best riders in the world and in the end i found out that i could actually race with them rather that just swing out of them all day. im not sure what my next race is, maybe a 1.1 next tuesday in Zotegem but im not 100% sure yet, but i am really looking forward to doing some more big races and im going to enjoy a bit of rest in between.

the last few weeks have been huge for me and my carrer so far. i have recently signed with a new team, “an post sean kelly team” and its something i have been aiming for since the team started about 5 years back so its nice to finaly get there. also i have been visiting the doctor often over the past few weeks and now the virus i had is 100% gone and i can get back into it now full belt. i have had to hold back on my training and racing since i started back about a month ago now so its good to be told i can go back to training really hard again… i returned back to ireland for a quick vist to do the suir valley 3 day race which was good training and has brought my fitness on that bit more again which is really good for the moral. it was also good to see all the irish based riders again…. now im back to belgium and i have my first race with the new team tomorow which is called ”Dwars door de Antwerpse Kempen” which is a uci 1.2 race. From what i was told its a flat and really fast race in the city of Antwerp and im really looking forward to getting stuck in. I will be joined by two of the other irish guys Ronan Mclaughlin and Mark Cassidy. So fingers crossed i will have something positive to report on tomorow night.

after 6 weeks out i done my first race on sunday and god did it hurt… in 30 degree heat i had to take on a fast and hilly course with alot of cross winds, which wasnt what i had hoped for…. i really had to use my head for the first few laps, stayed to the front away from crashes and splits in the bunch…. a break of 8 went with nobody from the team in it so after 40km i was ordered to work with the team and bring it back while 2 of the leaders of the team sat behind us and stayed fresh… we brought the break back to 20 seconds and then one of the guys on the team stijn penne attacked and got into the break so that was good after all the hard work… after that it was just a matter of surviving because after all the chasing i was empty… then after 80km when i was starting to come around my race ended with a rear puncture (in kirmese races in belgium there is no cars allowed to follow, so when you have any mechanical diffucilty your out)…  in the end my team mate finished 2nd which was a good result for the team… so back to training for the week now and try again at the weekend…..

post race photoafter my last post writing that i was finally back after a month of being sick i actually realised a couple of hours after writing it that i was still sick and needed another 2 weeks off. but now  everything is fine again and my bloods are back to normal so i can now start back slowly.. i have done a good weeks training now and i feel like a rider again wich is allways good after feeling shit for 6 weeks…. so now i am back in belgium and do my first race on sunday in a town called merlebek which is a nice race to start off with as its a kirmese with only 4 corners so it will be easy to hide and get some race miles back in the legs…. it has been a very hard 6 weeks mentally being off the bike as i missed out on 2 of my big goals of the year… being the ras and the national championships… though i think i would have had my work cut out even in my top fitness to beat bennet on the day as he is really proving to be world class, which is great to see to such a nice guy…..im really looking forward now to finish off the season strong and after 6 weeks off i should be fresh for the end of the year… while writing this i would like to say a huge thank you to my doctor Conor Mcgrane as he put in alot of work to make sure i got back to full fitness as soon as possible… i will look forward to writing my blogs every day now and fill you in on the crack in the house out here….
